Thursday, June 19th, 2008How To Get Your Business On Google, Yahoo and MSN Maps
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008I was looking for a Pizza joint nearest to my friend’s house and decided to use Google Maps to find it. Shortly after finding the information I wanted, I started to wonder how many resumes could I find on a local search. How many? Not so much…
I then began to wonder to myself, “Self, if you had a Staffing Agency, would you come up in a search on Google Maps?”
Well, I do not own a Searchfirm, but I was curious all the same. So, I did a search on Staffing, Recruiting and Executive Search, just to see what was out there. I expected to see red markers designating Searchfirms in every state. However, that was not the case and I am surprised to discover that. Why not? Its free advertising! I also decided to glance at how many firms were listed in Atlanta. In case you did not know, Atlanta has NO shortage of recruiters. Alas, the overall majority were not listed (as shown in the screenshot below).
And then I thought, hey, maybe people just do not know how to add their Staffing Agency to Google Maps? If that is the case, fret no more because I am going to show you how to do just that.
First things first, make sure your company is listed correctly in Google’s Local Business Center.
Its easy to do, just fill out the form and click “Next.” Is that it? Nope! Google is going to mail you (by regular US Postal Mail) an activation code and instructions that will (more or less) say, return to the Google Business Center web page and insert your activation code. Until you do that, your listing will not be included in the Google Maps listing. Is that it? Almost… It takes about 6 weeks before you see your entry in the system, but in the interim you can still use the Business Center to update any information you have already added.
Hey, while you’re in the mood, want to know how to add your business to Yahoo and MSN Map listings as well? If so, read on…
To add your listing to Yahoo Maps, click here (or the screenshot below), sign up and you’re good.
To get your business on MSN Maps, click here or the image below and fill out the forms.
Filling out the form to include your business information is pretty self-explanatory; plus (and I like this), you can add extra data like additional web page URLS, business hours, 10 photos of your business and extra goodies like that. (Thumbs up Microsoft on this one!)
Now after you have input your information, Microsoft is going to send you a confirmation code in the mail (regular postal mail); pretty much the same way Google does it. When the activation code arrives, hold on to it because you will need to add the code to your Local Listings Center to activate your business listing. (But you figure that out already, huh?)
If you find this type of information useful, leave me a comment so I will be encouraged to add more stuff like this on the site. Cool?
Happy Hunting!

Is eAnnouncer a cool tool or a spammer’s dream?
Saturday, June 14th, 2008Have you ever had the need to mass email several candidates? Well, if so, I have a cool tool for you to download. I have used it for multiple projects and it works seamlessly. The tool is called - eAnnouncer and it is a plugin for Microsoft outlook.
Here is a quick tutorial of how it works (ripped off from the company homepage). These directions apply (of course) after you have downloaded and integrated the product.
1. Start Outlook and create a new mail message.
2. When you’re done composing the message, click the “Announce” button on the toolbar.
3. Once you click the “Announce” button you will see the following dialog. Use the “Browse…” button to select your mailing list. If you’d like to preview or edit the mailing list before sending, select the “Open…” button.
4. Press the “Send” button to create and send all of your emails, one per recipient in your mailing list. As the emails are being created and sent you will see the status as shown in the following picture.
In the next screenshot (below) the mailing list contains 369 emails, and the 166th email is currently being sent. There is an estimated time remaining of 28 seconds. That’s it, you’re mail messages have been sent.
More reasons to use this tool:
- With the free version, you can send up to 50 emails at a time.
- You can set it to pause so many seconds between emails so an ISP will not think your legitimate email is an ad for Viagra.
- You can keep a history of all the email announcements you have sent.
- You are using Outlook to send your messages, so you don’t have to learn anything new
- Your emails go out individually and can be addressed specifically to each recipient
- No ads or banners of any kind when you use the free version. (Really like that)
If you are already sold on this, click here to purchase a copy, or click here to download the freebie (just remember that you can only send out 50 at a time with the free version).
I think you will like this one, let me know if you don’t. By the way, you may want to check out Subject Lines That Sell.
Subject Lines That Sell is an ebook on how to write compelling titles for your email so people will feel compelled to open them up and read them. Its really written for people who sell products online but hey, isn’t your job a product? Click here to check it out.
Happy Hunting!

How To Create Keyboard Shortcuts
Friday, June 6th, 2008If you are like me, you never have time to do anything. (Or at least, it feels that way.) Well one way to save some time in your day is to speed up some of your processes. Instead of doubleclicking the icons on your desktop, pressing a few buttons could easily do the same thing and simultaneously impress your co-workers. Let me show you what I mean.
This is a screenshot of my desktop. I am using Windows XP, but I believe this strategy works in Windows Vista as well.

Let’s say one of the first things I do everyday is get on Yahoo Instant Messenger to communicate with my coworkers.

I want a quicker way to open it. I suppose I could have it automatically open when I turn on my computer by adjusting the preferences, but that seems to slow down the booting process. So I right-click on the Yahoo Instant Messenger icon and choose “Properties” from the list of options.

A window pops up and defaults to the “Shortcut” tab (as shown below). I choose the letter “Y” as my shortcut and Windows automatically adds the combo of “Ctrl + Alt.”

Once I have the shortcut combo chosen, I click the “Apply” button (the arrow is pointing to it below) and then the “OK” button (located 2 buttons to the left of the “Apply” button).

Now with that done, if I want my Yahoo Instant Messenger to launch, I simply click “Ctrl + Alt + Y” and my Yahoo Instant Messenger launches instantly to my screen like so…

If you like the idea of Keyboard shortcuts, here are a few others to keep in mind.
